Pain Management

Acupuncture has been recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) since 1979 as providing drug free pain relief. The May 2010 German Journal of Anaesthesia & Analgesia reports that after conducting trials they found that acupuncture helps treat pain. The trial showed that acupuncture increased pain thresholds by up to 50% and that two types of nerve pain fibres were altered by acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a very effective pain reliever in the treatment of many conditions including:

  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Low back pain
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Tenosynovitis
  • Shoulder & Neck pain
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Toothache & post extraction pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Sprained ankles & knees
  • Cartilage problems
  • Tearing of muscles
  • Torn Ligaments & bruising

Chinese medicine maintains that the more than 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body connect with meridians or channels. Pain and disease are the result of these channels becoming blocked. By placing needles on the channels the healthy energy can be restored.

Western medicine’s view is that the placement of acupuncture needles at specific pain points releases endorphins and opioids, the body’s natural painkillers, and perhaps immune system cells as well as neurotransmitters and neurohormones in the brain. Research has shown that glucose and other bloodstream chemicals become elevated after acupuncture treatments.

According to the American National Institutes of Health’s National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, there is also evidence that stimulating acupuncture points enables electromagnetic signals to be relayed at a greater rate than under normal conditions. This may increase the flow of healing or pain-killing natural chemicals to injured areas.

If you are suffering arthritis pain of the hip joint, shoulder joint, knee joint, the hand, fingers or wrist or suffer from severe Gout, acupuncture is very effective in managing the pain associated with these conditions.
